Detroit Speed Inc
The DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car Brings Home Some Hardware at the CHP Nationals

Mooresville, NC – http://goo.gl/S4YF5 The 2nd annual Chevy High  PerformanceNationals was a huge success this past weekend at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA. There was an autocross, drag racing, a huge car show with hundreds of vehicles and enough action to keep everyone entertained throughout the weekend.

The event took place under mostly overcast skies all weekend which kept the temperatures down but the threat of rain high. Fortunately the rain held off just long enough to get everything in before finally falling to the ground Sunday afternoon after the event.

Detroit Speed Test Car Manager and Development Driver, Matt Butts, handled the driving duties this weekend in the DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car  filling in for usual driver Kyle Tucker. Matt did not disappoint, in fact Matt captured 1st place in the Street Machine Challenge Class Jet-Hot autocross on Saturday and followed that up with a Sunday win in the simultaneous start double elimination bracket style Sunday autocross shootout. Tim McGilton, Brian Finch and Randy Haskins were also out competing during the weekend in their DSE “Equipped” vehicles. Brian Finch took 1st place in the Top Ride Shootout in his DSE “Equipped” 1971 Camaro.

Detroit Speed was also awarded a Special Recognition award for our continued relationship with the Chevy High Performance Nationals and Chevy High Performance Magazine.

The autocross wasn’t the only action in town last weekend, there were also several classes of drag racing which gave the DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car a chance to show off its pure power in straight line racing.

While our 1970 Camaro Test Car was out on the tracking clocking top times, the Detroit Speed 2010 Camaro Test Car and the Detroit Speed 2012 Camaro Test Car that recently competed in the One Lap of America were at the Detroit Speed booth modeling our current and new 2010+ Camaro suspension products.

The Chevy High Performance Nationals is a great event that we look forward to participating in every year and we anxiously await the 3rd annual event in 2014. We look forward to seeing everyone next year.

Detroit Speed at Goodguys Nashville 2013 Recap

Mooresville, NC – Another quick trip down I-40 for Detroit Speed and the Test Cars resulted in another great weekend at LP field for the Goodguys 8th Nashville Nationals. Storms moved through Friday providing a wet start to the show but finished with two days of sunshine and a dry autocross track for some cone carving in the Test Cars.

A ten minute walk from the beautiful downtown Nashville scene saw hundreds of hot rods and thousands of spectators gather for what is quickly becoming one of the most popular shows on the Goodguys circuit. The autocross track was a hit for both spectators and drivers with crowds lining every inch of the fence separating the course from the fans. Detroit Speed co-owner and Pro-Class driver, Kyle Tucker, was out in full force in the DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car. He was eager to take home another 1st place while still taking the time to give interested customers a drive in the car to feel how the Detroit Speed suspension parts work. Detroit Speed Test Car manager and development driver, Matt Butts, was also on the track putting down some numbers in the DSE 1966 Mustang Test Car as well as our good friend Brian Finch and his DSE “Equipped” 1971 Camaro. During a weekend’s worth of racing and with times continually dropping throughout the event, Roger Burman and his DSE Equipped 1970 Camaro finished 1st place in the Pro Class with a blistering 35.55. Congratulations on the win Roger.

This is a date that is always circled when it comes to our yearly event schedule. Goodguys and the city of Nashville are always on top of their game and besides, we get to drive our muscle cars down one of the prettiest stretches of highway in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. We look forward to seeing everyone back again next year!

Stacy & Kyle Put Down Some Great Times at the Heidt’s Performance Car Challenge

May 14, 2013. http://goo.gl/ysm0l  Mooresville, NC – The Heidt’s Performance Car Challenge kicked off Friday afternoon at the Heidt’s Performance Group facility for a tour and a barbecue. Following the barbecue and registration, everyone gathered for the road rally that started at Heidt’s and went to the Holiday Inn in Joliet, IL.

Saturday morning kicked off the racing at Autobahn Country Club, it was cold and windy all weekend, but luckily the rain held off for the event.

The road course event took place bright and early on the 1.46 mile north course. Stacy was running her 1969 Camaro Test Car, while Kyle Tucker (@and Ryan Matthews made a quick trip over from South Bend. They recently finished the One Lap of America and stopped by for a little more racing in the 2012 One Lap of America Camaro Test Car. Kyle was so excited to get back on the track, he made one lap and ran out of gas. Oops!  Like they haven’t had enough racing the past seven days!  As road course racing continued all day, there was also the autocross and Speed Stop Squared Challenge that was going on all weekend long.

Stacy Tucker ran her Camaro hard and finished fourth on the road course and third in the autocross shootout while Kyle finished 2nd on the road course. Detroit Speed customer and friend, Tim McGilton, finished third in the road course and won the autocross shootout in his Detroit Speed built 1970 Camaro. Congratulations Tim! We would also like to congratulate the numerous Detroit Speed equipped cars out running hard throughout the competition.

We’re sure Kyle and Ryan were absolutely exhausted coming over from the finale of One Lap, but it was one they didn’t want to miss. The Hauler is back home and loading up for a quick turnaround as the team will head out for Goodguys Nashville taking place at Tennessee Titan stadium May 17th - 19th. We hope to see you out there.

The DSE White Monster Camaro at One Lap of America 2013

http://www.detroitspeed.com/speednews/OLOA-2013/OLOA-2013-pg-1.html

May 10, 2013.  Mooresville, NC – Kyle Tucker, Ryan Matthews and the White Monster Camaro took control of Virginia International Raceway on Thursday winning their class in all three sessions yesterday. They started off by securing a 1st in class and 11th overall finish on the south course and followed that up with another 1st place class finish and a 9th place overall finish on the north course. After lunch the guys were taking on the full course and ran spectacularly by taking 1st in their class and finishing 6th place overall to complete the SSGT2 Big Bore session sweep at VIR.

The Detroit Speed Crew made their way up north for the first time since autocrossing at Grissom Air Force base and look primed to take on the Pittsburgh International Race Complex north course for two sessions. Unfortunately this morning the weather is not cooperating with them as the track is currently being pounded by a morning storm. It looks like they’ll be running the session with a damp track. Nothing Kyle, Ryan, the White Monster Camaro and their BFG Rivals can’t handle.

Event Status:

Kyle, Ryan and the DSE White Monster Camaro currently sit in 2nd place, only 15 points back of 1st in their class. With three session wins at VIR the team moved up the overall standings to 15th place.

May 9, 2013.  Mooresville, NC – It’s good to be home! Kyle Tucker, Ryan  Matthews and the White Monster Camaro took home field advantage to a new level with a 1st in class and a 6th overall finish during the morning session at Carolina Motorsports Park. This picks them up crucial points in the chase for the top team in their class. The afternoon session saw clear skies again with more heat building in the track. This time it was Kyle’s turn in the driver’s seat. He finished 4th overall and 1st in class still without 4th gear. They managed to shift around 4th gear all day. The Rival tires are proving to be a fantastic asset to the team as they’ve held up great throughout the entire One Lap and show no signs of slowing down.

After the afternoon session the guys made their way to the BMW Performance Center just northeast of Greenville for an autocross competition. The White Monster handled the track well with a 2nd in class finish and a 13th overall finish. From there the team travelled up I-85 to another familiar track, Virginia International Raceway. This is going to be a busy day of racing as Kyle, Ryan, and the White Monster Camaro will take on the north the south and the full course at VIR. With VIR being another very familiar course for Kyle and Ryan, let’s see if they can pick up some ground on 1st place in their class.

Event Status:

Kyle, Ryan and the DSE White Monster Camaro currently sit in 2nd place in their class and with great finishes in at CMP moved up to 16th overall. They currently sit 35 points back of 1st in their class with a big day at VIR coming up.

May 8, 2013.  Mooresville, NC – Kyle Tucker and Ryan Matthews unfortunately lost the rear main seal yesterday morning but were able to get it replaced in time for the afternoon session and were back out on the track. The guys were able to take 1st place in their class and 15th overall for the session. What an amazing recovery. They had been gaining ground on 1st place in their class however the morning session setback currently leaves them 40 points behind 1st place in their class. This will just make for a more interesting finish for the SSGT2 Big Bore class at One Lap of America.

On their way out of Daytona the crew took a minute to talk with Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, they supplied Kyle and Ryan with pure southern hospitality as they left Daytona. The guys made their way up to CMP last night and are still having some issues with 4th gear. Coming back to the home track should be a big spirit lift and hopefully the guys can bring home a couple 1st place class finishes and get them right back in the hunt for 1st in class. Thanks again to Stacy’s parents Ron and Claudia and their friend Craig who came through for the guys with some help and best of all some homemade brownies.

Event Status:
Kyle, Ryan and the DSE White Monster Camaro currently sit in 2nd place in their class and with the morning session issues dropped back to 19th overall. With some good runs at CMP the guys can start cutting into that deficit for 1st in the SSGT2 Big Bore class.

http://www.detroitspeed.com/speednews/OLOA-2013/OLOA-2013-pg-1.html

Mooresville, NC – Finally the rain held off for at least a day and Kyle Tucker, Ryan Matthews and the Detroit Speed  2012 White Monster Camaro put in a fantastic day of racing claiming the top spots in their class for both sessions along with a 10th place overall finish in the morning and a 11th place overall in the afternoon sessions at NOLA Motorsports Park. With the class wins they are quickly moving to the top spot in their class, SSGT2 Big Bore, where they currently sit in 2nd place.

The guys packed up and waved goodbye to NOLA and set their sights on Daytona International Speedway. They arrived this morning at 12:30 and were able to get some much needed rest. They might just receive some good ol’ home cooking as Stacy’s parents are located 20 minutes from the track.

Kyle and Ryan are now preparing for their morning and afternoon sessions on the road course before making their way close to home for some road racing at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC on Wednesday.

Event Status:

Kyle, Ryan and the DSE White Monster Camaro currently sit in 2nd place in their class and moved up to 15th overall. Only five points currently separate them from 1st in their class. With some solid runs at Daytona and a great finish at their “home” track we’ll see if they can move up to 1st in their class.

Kyle, Ryan and the DSE 2012 Camaro Test Car Take on One Lap of America 050613

http://www.detroitspeed.com/speednews/OLOA-2013/OLOA-2013-pg-1.html

Mooresville, NC – Kyle Tucker, Ryan Matthews and the Detroit Speed  White Monster Camaro had an eventful weekend that saw them climbing the standings after successful runs at the Autocross at Grissom Air Force Base and the Little Talladega road course morning and afternoon sessions.

Kyle and Ryan started their One Lap of America journey at Tire Rack’s headquarters Friday morning for a tech inspection followed by an afternoon driver’s meeting. From there they were able to get some much needed rest as the competition would begin bright and early Saturday morning for the Wet Skid Pad event that was held at Tire Rack. The crew and the White Monster Camaro were “getting their feet wet in the event” posting a 44th overall finish and 8th in class for the event.

From there, the crew moved on to Grissom Air Force base eager to put that tough finish behind them and start to climb back up the overall and class standings. Boy did they ever. Kyle and Ryan took home a 2nd place class finish in the autocross, a great finish for the team and the White Monster Camaro.

Next it was on to Talladega and the Little Talladega Road Course. Kyle and Ryan really began to make a push for the top of the standings with a 1st in class and a 14th overall finish during the morning session and followed that up with an improved time and a 7th place overall and 1st in class finish during the afternoon sessions. Those great finishes landed the team in the 2nd spot in their class with an eye on moving up to the top during the drag strip event at Alabama International Drag way. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to rain but gave the team a bit of a head start for their push to New Orleans and the NOLA Motorsports Long Course.

After refueling the body a little during a late night quick stop for some food, Kyle and Ryan were back on the road with their sights set on NOLA Motorsports Park. The crew arrived a little early and had some time for a quick inspection of the Camaro. Everything looked good as they geared up for a morning session on the road course.

Event Status:

Kyle, Ryan and the DSE White Monster Camaro currently sit in 2nd place in their class and 20th overall. The event now moves to a morning and afternoon session at NOLA Motorsports Park where Kyle and Ryan will try and gain some more ground on 1st place in their class.

DSE’s 1st Annual Southern Slam a Huge Success

Mooresville, NC – The 1st Annual American Street Car Series Southern Slam hosted by Detroit Speed had everything you could ask for in a weekend event. From old muscle cars to new, the competitors came out in numbers and put on a show running the road course on Saturday and finishing up on the autocross Sunday morning.

The Detroit Speed crew arrived at Carolina Motorsports Park early Friday afternoon for setup and to get some track time with the 1970 Camaro Test Car, the 1969 Camaro Test Car, the 1966 Mustang Test Car, the FR500S Mustang and the new 2012 Camaro. As more and more familiar faces pulled into the track the buzz surrounding the weekend was beginning to build. Kyle took a group of drivers out on the track for some on course tips to keep them on the track and keep their times low. Then it hit. Just as a few of our test cars and other competitors were finishing up some late afternoon runs, the clouds collapsed and let loose a heavy rain that lasted into the early hours of Saturday morning. The track testing for the day was over, but the event was just beginning.

Saturday morning was ushered in by unseasonably cool temperatures but plenty of sunshine. After tech and registration was finished the competitors gathered underneath the Detroit Speed hauler for the driver’s meeting and some last minute tips on handling a damp and cool track. The road course started just after 9:00 AM with 6 run groups of 8-10 cars getting around 10-15 minutes of track time. Kyle and Stacy Tucker having hundreds and hundreds of lap experience at CMP were out in front of each pack for a warm up that allowed the drivers to see the line that would yield the lowest track times.

The roar of engines and squeal of tires were the background music for a morning of non-stop road course racing that lasted right up until the last minute for lunch. This was a great chance for the drivers to make any minor or major modifications to their vehicles trying to pry any extra time they could away from the notoriously unforgiving track at CMP. It was also a great chance to give the engine a breather and cool down for what would be a warmer afternoon filled with more road course racing.

Racing was back underway just before 2:00 PM with drivers itching to get back on the course and knock some time off of their morning runs. The afternoon brought with it more sunshine and higher temperatures which resulted in high track and tire temps. You had to be careful to follow your lines and trust the information that Kyle, Stacy and the other highly experienced CMP drivers had to offer. Stacy and Kyle also offered up their passenger seat for ride alongs the entire day so drivers could see the perfect lines at high speed.

Racing lasted throughout the afternoon until the early evening hours. A low country boil was in store for all who attended the event following a long day of road course racing. Following the low country boil was the ever competitive go-kart racing and as always Albert Melchoir of Carbon Customs broke out the grill and whipped up some pork chops and steaks throughout the evening. Drivers relaxed and re-energized for what would prove to be an exciting day of high-speed autocross action Sunday morning.

Sunday morning was even cooler than Saturday with low temps sitting in the high 30’s as the sun came up over the horizon. Another driver’s meeting and a quick walk through of the track preceded the non-stop fast paced autocross action. With a large track the event organizers were able to send three competitors out at a time staggered to optimize the amount of runs each driver would be able to make. The autocross track was just over a mile long with runs in the low 60’s. The competition was tight the entire time with the winner posting a time just under a second better than the 2nd place finisher.

After all the excitement was over it was time for the awards ceremony. Mike Holleman, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday, was awarded the Spirit of the Event award which comes with an invitation to showcase his ride at SEMA and compete in the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Pahrump, NV following the show. We also presented Scott Carey and his 1964 Chevelle with the Gear Jammer award. Scott actually had to stop at a driveshaft shop in Mooresville, NC and install his new driveshaft in the Mooresville Wal-Mart parking lot before continuing on to Kershaw and competing hard all weekend. Congrats also goes out to Douglas Wind who won the road course portion of the event and to Daniel Walters who took home the autocross trophy.

We were absolutely thrilled with the entire turnout at Carolina Motorsports Park and had a blast with many friendly faces new and old. We look forward to the second annual event next year! We would like to thank American Street Car Series for allowing us to be part of their family and also BFGoodrich and Jet-Hot who are the perfect sponsors for an event like this. We’ll see you
next year!

The Detroit Speed “West Coast Swing” Del Mar 2013 Recap

Mooresville, NC – It was another beautiful weekend in California as Detroit Speed finished out the “West Coast Swing” in Southern California for the Goodguys Del Mar show.

The wonderful weather brought out thousands of spectators and many participants for the show favorite, the Goodguys Autocross. There were a good number of drivers in their DSE Equipped cars running hard on the autocross all weekend long. Of course, as always, Pro Class drivers Kyle and Stacy Tucker were out in the DSE 1966 Mustang Test Car and the 1969 Camaro Test Car. The competition was stiff in the Pro Class with times getting faster each day.  Kyle had a good showing in the Mustang and Stacy ran well in the Camaro.

The Editor’s Challenge was exciting, as usual, with 13 editors participating this year. For the Editor’s Challenge, each editor drove three cars in the Challenge and their times were averaged for all three runs. The Detroit Speed Mustang was one of the vehicles used in the Challenge. It was enjoyable for Kyle and Stacy to take a break from the running and watch the editor’s take their turn with the Mustang Test Car and put it through the paces. All the editor’s drove great but it came down to a close run between Chad Reynolds of BangShift.com and Jeff Smith of Car Craft Magazine. In the end, Jeff Smith came out on top of all 13 editors. Congratulations Jeff!

This is a great event that we look forward to coming to year after year. This was also a good opportunity to show our new Mustang product line to many people who had not been able to see it in person.
